Like a Fish Out of Water
Roxy Rezvany x Barbican
2020
Like a Fish Out of Water, directed by my friend and long-time collaborator Roxy Rezvany, explores the intersecting battlegrounds faced by women of interracial immigrant heritage in Britain today. You are ‘a woman in a man’s world’, you are a ‘foreigner’ in your own homeland, and you are always ‘half’ of something rather than a ‘whole’. The film looks at entering new social spaces that people like you haven’t historically occupied, whilst on a personal level you are still struggling to even ‘occupy’ yourself.
Inside Out Shorts is a series of films exploring the relationship between our inner lives and creativity, commissioned by The Barbican in collaboration with The Smalls.
